3C) Mind map out in groups of 4

1.What is the theme of the Suite?

when it comes to comparing all themes, three of them are based around the theme of Christmas. during all the Christmas idents there conventions of Christmas placed within each ident for example things such as snow, trees, presents and the iconic figure "Santa". when it comes to the ITV suite of idents the theme was "Santa". when it comes to the BBC Three ident has the theme of Christmas in general. When it comes to the Sumo TV ident there is a theme of Christmas that has a comedic approach. The two other idents are based around campaigns the first example has a campaign with the BBC based around the idea of diversity and unity within a generation of England.Regarding the theme on the last video is based around the idea of  film genre in order for us to establish this they used a celluloid film effect. however when i compare to the Idents I made  with the them of "a House is a Home" so this is completly different to a seasonal ident. my suite that i made is recognizable because it shows conventions and conveys tones as to what it is to be like at home for example cosy and warm.

2.How does the theme appeal to the viewers?

the theme can appeal to the viewers because the theme is Christmas and create can interest a vast amount of people for example this could attract young family with kids because the theme creates conventions of being exciting and happy also when comparing all the other suites of idents they can be similar because the theme of Christmas is apparent throughout and it also conveys tones of love and togetherness that can appeal to the audience. most of the idents I'm comparing tend to be heart warming which can be directed towards families however the film 4 ident is quite critical as it shows the genre of film which can generate fear and suspense for the audience.

3.How they have used the same theme in different ways to create Brand Loyalty

Each channel has used the same theme through out their idents, a great example of this can be found on the BBC idents, The theme of the idents is "oneness". This up holds the brand identity of togetherness as the brand is known as being globally accepting of every race and ethnicity.this will make their viewers loyal as they are familar with the concept that the BBC are portraying in their idents.

Film 4 idents have the theme of being heavily film based, this is evident through out their idents. This keeps the viewers brand loyalty as their idents share the whole idea of the TV channel which is showing films.

SumoTV keep their brand loyalty by not straying away from their DIY style of animation. this is what the audience of SumoTV have become a custom to. This creates brand loyalty as the style of their animations reflect the nature of the channel. However for the ITV their brand theme strays away from their brand concept, however they have done this to appeal to their audience as it is Christmas time. In a way you could say that this creates brand loyalty as they are making a separate set of idents in order to capitalise on the holiday season.

4. Are the idents information led- or entertainment led?

In conclusion, there are a number of similarities for this category; are the idents information-led or entertainment -led the suites of idents for BBC Three, BBC One, Sumo TV, ITV and Film 4 are all entertainment led. This is because idents are in place or used for entertainment purposes, as by using idents they are advertising the channel and is an experience for the viewers. Entertainment-led idents are an advantage because they keep viewers engaged and presents the channel in a positive way. Another advantage is that if idents are entertainment-led, they should look like mini movies so that the audience are able to know about the content of the channel in its own right, so the channel can create separate content the audience can enjoy. Lastly, the quality expected on idents is increasing greatly, so by having an entertainment led ident, it gives the audience a visual remider of the channel. These are key requirements as to how to make a successful ident. If they do not appeal to the audience, then the ident will become unsuccessful, because it is all about the image.

5. Are the idents intended to be used at a particular time of day?

When designing a suite of idents, it is important to consider the time of the day in which the idents will be shown. A successful suite of idents will be able to tell the viewers the type of programmes that will be shown at a particular time. It also gives the viewer a better understanding of the programme schedule that makes up the day. Film 4 is an example of a channel that has a suite of idents that are intended to be used at a particular time of day. The ident below is intended to be used to segment content that starts in the night (8:00pm -12:00). It is also used to indicate that 18+ films are about to be shown and that the audience is entering watershed hours. The fact that the ident is shot during the night suggests this.

Similarly, BBC one's suite of idents are also designed to be used at a particular time of day. All the idents within the suite include people doing daytime activities, such as swimming and excising. This suggests that specific idents within the suite, are intended to be used in the morning.

Although both ITV and BBC three's suite of idents are Christmas themed, the design and content of the idents shows that they are intended to be used during the evening and night (6-10pm). For example, the ITV ident below shows a man putting up his Christmas lights. This is something that is typically done in the night. The voiceover within the ident also tells the viewer that X factor is about to begin. X factor is a programme that is shown at 8pm, in the night.

Similarly to Film 4's suite of idents, Sumo tv's idents are meant to be shown strictly at night. This is because the design of the idents are somewhat graphic and are suitable for older audiences. This again, could signal a change of programming and the start of watershed hours.

6. Are idents intended to be used at a particular time of year?

Television channels often create a suite of idents for a particular time of year. Most of these suites of idents share a similarity, in terms of being used for a particular time of year. The BBC three, Sumo tv and ITV suite of idents are all intended to be used during Christmas time. There are various Christmas iconography and visual themes included in the idents that suggest this. For example, one of the ITV idents includes a man putting up Christmas lights. Sumo tv also has an ident that includes a fairy decorating a Christmas tree. These particular suites of idents are created and designed to tell the viewers that the Christmas  schedule has begun. Viewers should expect to see Christmas shows.

7. What does the suite convey about the channels identity?

One similarity i found when comparing how the suite of idents convey the brands identity is that they all have chosen a theme that ties in well with their brand identity . For example the BBC  always keep a diverse set of people to star in their idents, this can be translated as unity. In addition the christmas ident conveys the same identy as the christmas time is all about being together with people, this can also be seen as unity.

However film 4 have the brand identity have a brand identity of showing a variety of films that they show. This is a different because their idents are almost more focused on making the genre of films that the tv channel show . where as the other channels such as sumo tv seem to show some sort of personality, for example silly or crude.

8. How effective the design of the suite is?

Picture

Through, looking at my and my groups examples I'am able to conclude that the effectiveness of a suit of idents design is very important as it allows audiences to be able to gather a sense of understanding about the product being broadcasted at hand. The suites of idents for Sumo.Tv, BBC Three, BBC One, ITV and Film all have a purpose to why their design of there suite of idents is deemed effective. This is because the design is about the concept of understanding each individual suite of idents target audience in order to create a suitable design that will appeal and engage the attention of the audiences your broadcasting to. Furthermore, I noticed that what they all have in common is that all the channels designs are made to suit an audience for example sumo.tv reflects that of an relaxed, funny, silly but humorous which captures their target audience, while like on the other hand, the BBC will reflect themselves through 'Unity' in which has been continuous through out the suite. So the design of ones suite of idents has to engage and appeal to their set target audience as thats who they are trying to appeal to by satisfying there needs and wants. Lastly, the design of an ident is very important because it is the main way in which a company can get their message of the purpose of their ident across to audiences and will be representing the companies image. The key things you should keep in mind when referring to design are:

Tempo
Audience interaction
Density
Information - led or Entertainment - led
Space and Time

The design of the ident is key as it allows you to be able to show that you are able to understand your consumers/audiences by reflect your product for them and appealing to there wants and needs in which will lead to brand loyalty.

9. How effective the design of the suite is? (Typography, pace, density of information, brand identity)

I am able to come to a conclusion that an ident has different aspects in which they pin point all their attention into to gather the appeal of their set out target audience i came to this result as to what me and my fellow team members have researched and found out proving that Typography, pace, density of information, and brand identity is recognised in the design process of a suite of idents. Its important that a suit of idents must recognise its audience as this is which they are advertising and selling/marketing their product to, to make consumers want more and be able to distinguish you products brand from others. I have noticed that the suites of idents for Sumo.Tv, BBC Three, BBC One, ITV and Film 4 all have a certain way of appealing to their audience as Sumo.Tv theme is relaxed, funny, silly and played back but they didn't incorporate density of information due to their audience they are appealing to. However, the typography was colourful and joined up which could relate to an young audience also the pace was quite fast as the idents where brief and humorous which mainly showed the visual side rather than information due to audience. compared to BBC Three which is focused on young audiences 16-34 year-olds are it's centre of gravity because the typography appeals and is attractive to a vast amount of people allowing them to recognise the product at hand.

So yes, I can strongly agree that Typography, pace, density of information, helps to distinguish the design of an suit of idents allowing  audiences to enjoy their product to their full ability.

Task 3b & 3c: Analysis of Suite of Idents

What the theme of the suite is

The theme of this ident is "Oneness"

How/why the theme appeals to the viewers

the theme of oneness appeals to the viewers because it offers the idea of community cohesion between  people of different backgrounds. This is what audiences are familiar as they are reflect the audience within their idents with.
For example at (0:07-0:36) this ident shows a group of people from different backgrounds engaging in an exercise class. This ident creates a tone of realism as these are average people being used in the ident instead of "Perfect" looking models. This tone fits in with the average everyday viewer of BBC One as they know they live an everyday life. The same point can be made for the ident at (0:37-0:56) this ident shows a group of average looking people engaging in a swimming activity together. this also expresses the tone of realism.

How they have used the same theme in different ways to create Brand Loyalty

The same point can be made for the ident at (0:37-0:56) this ident shows a group of average looking people engaging in a swimming activity together. this also expresses the tone of realism. This has created a brand loyalty to their viewer as they know that they are branding their channel to everyday people , this is one of the elements that remains loyal amongst fans.

Explain whether, how and why the idents are information-led or entertainment led

in te in term of these suite if idents , they are mostly used for entertainment purposes, this can be proven as there is always movement going on that keep the viewer engaged , for example in the first ident in the suite all the people in the ident were being active as they were using exercise. the movement of all the people is engaging the audience as it is the main focus. Another example is in the wheel chair rugby team they are constantly moving , i feel that this is enough to keep the audiences attention while they wait for the programme to be air. Although you can argue that these idents are entertainment led, it does relay some information led elements, as there is a present doing a voice over of the ident.

Are idents intended to be used at a particular time of year?
I
The idents for BBC One don't necessarily have to a certain time period. It is not like the theme of the ident is based around season theme, but these idents can be used pretty much any time of the year, all year round. On one hand this is positive because it makes it more convient for the the TV company. However the down sound is this can be seen as the channel not being in touch with the culture of their target audience. especially around December audiences will expect to see more christmas themed idents.

What does the suite convey about the channel's Brand Identity ?

This suite conveys the brand image that the BBC is a brand that is based on together and cohesion. this is evident in all the differ types of people that are represented in their idents. For example , what remain continuous is the use of people doing an activity together. This express the idea of Unity and Togetherness (or in this case Oneness). Another thing this suit of idents convey about the channels identity is the everyday familaritity, the reason i have used this example is because all the characters in this ident have some sort of relationship or bond with each member similar to a team or a squad. This also reflects all of the demographic that the BBC manage to reach on a daily basis. I feel this is the identity that is used within all the different TV channels BBC are responsible for creating. This why the BBC has stayed around for as long as it has.

Ai

How effective the design of the suite is in communicating Visual information to a non-visual audience
The connection of unity and together has been continuous throughout this suite of idents. As a I result I feel the target audience will be able to relate easily, as this channel is suppose to represent the viewers. For example Even if the idents aren't showing typical activities (e.g. Swimming in the sea or rescue team) we are still united as people no matter what activities you take part in. This is the non visual information that the BBC are trying to express.

Assess
As a suite of idents, i feel as if it does a good job at appealing to the target audiences , one way I feel they have done this is by the appearance of the people involved in the ident. As i referenced before a mix of culture people from all ages, this is one of the elements that makes this ident. Also I feel as if the the font of their ident is different than it used to be, with motionless changes being the typography, this has been made more slick in design compare to previous bold BBC logo, this was done most likely to show that The TV channel can re brand themselves but at the same time still keep their brand identity in tack. The pace of the ident is dictated by the people starring on the ident and what activity they are doing. For example I would say that the dancing ident is at a faster pace than the rescue team ident as the people who are exercise are moving about and interacting more than the rescue team. This was must likely to show and interpretate all the differ styles of the people all over the globe.

UNIT 32 TASK 2A - Opportunities

In this report i will be looking at some the opportunities that idents have to offer a company.

Creating Corporate Identity

In this current world , Television programs are not limited to one country, they have become a multi nation business. In order to create different brans that relate with people in different locations , Tv companies need to think about their corporate identity. For example The BBC have successfully created a range of TV channel to reach new audience but at the same time keeping their corporate identity. Like BBC 3 which is for their viewers who are young adults however they never stray away from their identity which is centred around togetherness.

notably the increased use if online platforms such as iplayers and on demand services it is important that companies still have their corporate identity known across all channels.

Branding of content

Another advantages of idents is the opportunity you will get in terms of branding of content. this means that the ident will show idents that correspond to the program that is coming up next. For example ITV 2 often play the ident of family guy before the show plays. however Family Guy comes on later at night in the TV scheduling so in order to brand their channel , in a way where they have more adult centred comedy the later in the day it gets.

Creation of tone

It is important that idents display the right tone for the channel, its displayed on and is both suitable and appealing to the set target of the audience with information that is corresponding to the brand identity of the channel. For Kerrang often set the tones of their idents being loud and rebellious, this works perfectly in regards to the identity of their brand as they are a music channel who i know for their rock and roll genre.

Appealing to target

Appealing to a target audience is huge opportunity when it comes to idents. This is because the target is the people who will be consuming and watching the ident. This is important as it allows the view to buy into the channel based on what they are being shown visually. A good example of this is the use of sky sports's idents. They are constantly making idents that appeal to their target audience who are men who are interested in sport. This is effective because they will be more likely to view the programme as they have catered to their viewing needs. In this case sky sports have dedicated ident for the differenrt sports that you will find on their channel.

Creating Brand loyalty

Creating a loyal atmosphere involving the audience in a brand makes the audience feel as if they are apart of the building of the channel identity, it is essentially the peoples channel, which is beneficial as they are the ones who will be spectating the channel. An example of this concept is the E4 , Often e4 have a series that will end from time to time. Rather than the view find a different channel to watch they will often look for a new show on E4 to watch as they are loyal to that channel.

UNIT 32 TASK 2B - Limitaions

In this report i will be going through some of the limitations that you may face when making TV idents

  1. Typography
    1.  The ident has to use graphics and text to communicate a much deeper meaning in a simplistic manor. This is a limitation because the designers have to display who the company is aiming their channel toward and maintaining the audience through imagery. The ident can only be displayed on screen for less than 20 seconds, which makes it challenging for the company to show the ident how they wish. Translating graphics and text to the television screen is also difficult. Not all fonts will be displayed correctly causing typography to appear broken up or pixilated. Here is an example in The types of typography used across all the BBC channels.

  1. Colour
  2.  Colours are used to identify a company’s ident or channel through the colour being unique. It is very important to ensure that the logo is visible for the colour blind or impaired sighted. This is also an issue for particular colours which when displayed onto television appear discoloured. For example, bright reds are prone to noise so should be evaded in the design. Designers will have to test idents and make appropriate changes, which may change the whole design on the ident.  Broadcast Safe colours need to make sure they are being when making idents, this is a selected colour pallet they designers need to pay attention to.

here is an example of how certain colour will distort when broadcasted on a modern TV.

  1. Aspect Ratio
  2. The screen aspect ratio has an effect on the overall design, as the designer will be producing the ident for a specific shape. This restricts the design itself as the typical aspect ratio of 4:3, creates a rectangular shape meaning that the design will also have to be rectangular and landscape. The aspect ratio can also be effective through idents in a different way. Although they are usually designed for a 4:3 ratio, not everyone will be viewing television in this format. For example, there will be people watching television on their computers or on a wide screen or HD television, which will use a 16:9 ratio. This means that the design will translate differently onto these forms stretching the ident outwards or squashing it inwards and altering the look of the design. Also, this means that the ident may not actually be able to be shown in some cases.

Resolution

Resolution – All TVs are not in the same resolution so when making an ident it is better to make it in different resolutions for example here are some of the resolutions Modern tvs adapt to.

Resolution all has to do with the quality in which the ident is being displayed in. The higher in 'p' a tv resolution is the more pixels the tv is displaying, this what makes modern tv look so crisp. If this factor is not taken into account then this could make an ident look less professional as the ident will look pixelated.

Here is an example of a 4k video , one of the videos with higher quality on youtube.

Size

Another limitations you need to consider when producing an ident is the size of the ident , by this I mean you need to take into consideration all the platforms your ident could possibly be view on. In this modern days there are so many ways you can view media such as a smartphone or even a games console . With this being a fact companies need to make sure their idents are a certain size in order to be compatible with multiple platforms .
