Andrew Godwin task 2b part i

in-concert and ‘as live’ footage (performance)
Performance videos are the most common type of style of video. This usually consists of the artists (or group) performing at a concert.  This would include a crowd of fans who would be reacting positively. This is done by done to encourage fans to want to come to their live shows, where they would be able to purchase merchandise.

Another way a music videos can use the performance style is by have shots that show the artist/ band in a studio performing the song. this is done to amplify the concept that the music is still the most important factor.

interpretative; (Music and Visuals - illustrative, amplified)
Interpretative videos involve the correlation between music and visuals. this is can be either the lyrics itself or the actual instrumentation. This can be done in three different ways which are Illustrate, Amplify and contradict.
Illustrate
Music videos  use this so they can utilises a set of images that portray the meaning of lyrics and the respective genre. For example in the music video "Role" by Flowzart, there are images of the artist smoking . this is illustrated by the lyric "I'm blowing out smoke." This makes it very easy for the view to know what the artist is talking about.

Amplified
music videos can use amplification to add more meaning that may not be as clear through lyrics. This can be shown in music videos by using a prop or a certain setting. One video that does this is "Hot in here" by Nelly. they have amplified the idea of being "hot" as sexual desire. this is shown in the video as there are props such as thermostats.

Narrative

Narrative is when a story is told throughout the music video. as a narrative the lyrics or the visuals do not have to relate to each-other. In most narrative videos the song tends to become a soundtrack for the story which is being told throughout the music video. Narrative music videos tend to contradict the lyrics and the visuals with no links what so ever. However they will create a narrative that fits the mood base on the instrumentation.

examples

impressionist (conceptual)

impressionist music videos tend to be quite artistic and metaphorical based for example conceptual videos a based off of colours, themes and tones. for example a certain colour could reflect a mood or a certain instrument in the track. the artist wouldn't tend to be shown in their own music videos due to conceptual music videos tend to come from Indie artists so their star image doesn't tend to matter. These tend to turn into viral videos as they become popular to audiences.

Referencing (intertextuality);

Iggy Azalea's Fancy has intertextual references because it refers to the 1995 film, Clueless. Iggy Azalea Gained a worldwide recognition because it was a pastiche to the film. A pastiche is a respectful mimic of a particular artist, style or director that is copied without being made to mimic/mock. The reason this was done was to promote the film Clueless as the music video was old school and had the same exact scenes as what was in the film. At 0:41, this scene is a replica as what was filmed. Instead of there being three girls, there is the main artist, Iggy and the artist that features in the song, Charlie XCX with two other actors which are boys. The two artists are playing characters in this music video to take the attention off them as well as gain recognition.
